Panama

Finca Lerida is located 10 minutes away from central Boquete. At the end of his work as a Panama Canal engineer in 1924, the Norwegian Tollef Mönniche and his wife Julia purchased and moved to Finca Lerida. In the coming years, he invented and patented the “sifon”, a device designed separate “floaters” from the rest of the harvest. This device is now is used worldwide by many coffee plantations, and the original machine is still in use at Finca Lerida where Mönniche’s old processing plant continues to process coffee of excellent quality. In 1929, Finca Lerida exported its first shipment of Panamanian coffee to Germany. This founded Panama’s reputation as a country where high quality coffee was produced. IAC’s Lerida Estate coffees encompass a wide range of cup characteristics; each lot on offer is wildly different, but all display equally high quality and clarity of flavor.

The Lerida Estate is currently managed by The Chiari Family, who maintain the proper husbandry of the shrubs, protect the exuberant virgin rainforest around the farm, and run a resort hotel and outdoor sports program on the estate. This mix of incomes allows the farm to focus on quality as well as protecting the rich biodiversity of the property. It is home to more than 550 different species of birds, making it an ideal and accessible place for bird watching in the highland region of Chiriqui.

This particular lot comes from a single producer and is milled at the Lerida Estate beneficio. The coffee was cultivated and harvested by Sonia Amoruso on Finca Doña Maria, her eight hectare farm.
